Dawson awarded Insight grant

Canada Research Chair and Sociology Professor Myrna Dawson was recently awarded an Insight grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for her project entitled, “Location, location, location: Examining the geography of justice for victims and perpetrators of violence.” The funding award will allow Dr. Dawson to examine the way in which punishments for violent crime vary across jurisdictions, an issue not well understood in socio-legal research. Understanding what groups are affected, where and why is integral to ensuring equitable access to justice for both defendants and victims. Ranked sixth out of 91 applicants, Dr. Dawson will receive $355,550 over the next five years to address various gaps in current research on the criminal justice processing of violent crime in Canada. Collaborating with her on this project is Tina Hotton, a Research Associate at the Centre for the Study of Social and Legal Responses to Violence, and various graduate and undergraduate students.
