New research funding has been awarded by SSHRC to a team of researchers who will examine coercive control, risk assessment and intimate partner violence. Dr. Carmen Gill, a professor of sociology at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, and her colleagues, including Sociology professor Myrna Dawson, received a grant of $180,743 over three years to support their partnership with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canadian Police Knowledge Network and the École nationale de police du Québec. The project will engage with police agencies across Canada to examine police understanding of coercive controlling behaviours and to improve their risk assessment tools in relation to this type of violence and abuse. This research will also include a workshop to establish a dialogue and future direction for research activities, a survey of police officers’ understanding and perceptions of coercive control, and the development of training materials.
